Inevitable is a habit I never want to break, and poll

Good god. I find it appalling, absolutely appalling, that I only put out three chapters of Inevitable in 2007. How do you people stand me?

I've been writing this story for over three years. That's right, the first chapter was posted on Feb. 2, 2005. Some of my friends have children younger than that.

So, 10 factoids as I prepare to write this story to the bitter end (or why Mhalachai should never admit to the haphazard way she plots)

1. I've learned to never mix first-person POV (Anita) and third-person-limited POV (Harry) ever. again.

2. In the first draft of Inevitable, Anita was pregnant.

3. The idea to make Damian into Harry's grandfather didn't occur to me until I was midway through chapter five.

4. I never even thought of going Anita/Harry in this story, even though there's that whole ardeur thing. He's still seventeen and she's twenty-seven and to me (currently twenty-nine), that's beyond squicky.

5. I did, however, plan the slashy goodness between Harry and Nathaniel from an early stage.

5a. And as I grow older, a little Harry/Asher is appealing, instead of appalling.

6. The most annoying part of this story (as a writer) is the contrived way in which I got rid of the Dursleys. Looking back, it could have done a whole lot better.

7. In this story, Anita/Richard aren't all that dysfunctional simply because I can't stand whiny Richard.

8. After 75 chapters, I still have no idea what to do with Micah.

9. After writing this story, Harry/Luna/Ginny have become my OT3 forever. Seriously, how awesome can they be?

10. Elsa was originally going to appear in exactly one scene. And then she exploded into my mind as a full character. In my head, Reece has a total crush on her, which is entirely disturbing.

And because my mind is hard-wired to cross things over, a Poll on Inevitable, Torchwood and the inevitable inescapable inexorable predictable crossover:

[Poll #1134446]

(Anonymous) 2008-02-07 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think Reece (the Littlest Werewolf) should crush on Elsa. It would unnerve her to no end, and Harry too -- but then some of Jean-Claude or Asher (or Dumbledore) might rub off on Harry and he might decide to use this as a way to manipulate Elsa.

By the way, good on you for spotting what a manipulative bastard Dumbledore was in canon, long before most of us would admit it.

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
While Reece can tell/smell that Elsa's something different, they still look about the same age and he's entering those tender years when little werewolves start to look at girls as something other than chew toys. Ah, to be young. (and to be fiar to Elsa, she really, really hates people who take away innocence from children (married at 12?) and so she won't take advantage of Reece in any perverted way, at least).

And thanks! Dumbledore is a manipulative bastard who's running a way at the expense of Harry's life. Sad, but true. I mean, yay for the wizarding world, but Harry really needed to ditch the hero worship.

[identity profile] thymidinekinase.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I told my mother this view of Dumbledore over Christmas, and she was really disturbed and thought it said something sad about me.

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's totally Dumbledore. He was a war general whose main solider was an 11-year-old child. It's a messed up situation in any event, and the only reason we felt sympathy for Dumbledore was that he actually cared about Harry as a person. He still did what he had to do to save the whole world from a crazed powerful madman.

And it's possible that I read too much into a children's book, but whatever. Universal themes, etc.

[identity profile] catherinecookmn.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
You're not reading too much into the books at all. Dumbledore can't drop the habits of a lifetime; he's still all about "the greater good". Meaning that he'll throw away a goodly number of people to achieve it.

He was definitely willing to throw away Snape's life -- he and Voldemort knew what Snape did not, that if Snape disarmed/defeated him, the Elder Wand, which Voldie coveted, became Snape's. Except Draco disarmed Dumbles first, which Dumbledore hadn't planned on happening.

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but see, Snape was evil and ugly. He was a bad guy because of the way he treated Harry.

[/sarcasm]

But yeah. We could have this conversation for days. We agree on this point.

[identity profile] catherinecookmn.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
That's just one of the many things that irritates me. That, and finding out that The Depantsing Prank (aka Snape's Worst Memory) happened after the Marauders tried to kill Snape. Now, Dumbledore had told Harry that James, Harry's father, had showed remorse and mended his ways after he decided at the last second to save Snape from wolf-Remus. But to judge from SWM, the only reason James would have regretted Snape's death would be because he'd have lost his favorite punching bag, not because of compassion or anything like that.

Yeah

[identity profile] cannonfodder-g.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I thought you were incredibly cruel with your low Innevitable post count last year. But as a good rabid-fangirl, I'll took it, and will keep taking it - so long as you promise a finish :D

Re: Yeah

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't like a planned thing - I drifted away from the story post-DH. New canon always messes me up. But it's okay; there will be more soon. As soon as I can re-read 480,000 words.

Re: Yeah

[identity profile] cannonfodder-g.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
No worries. This is, hands down, one of my favorite crossover fics - hell one of my favorite HP fics (and I'm one of those HP addicts that've read millions of words of fic, let me tell you).

And I'm not a rereader, but I have probably red this a total of 3 times - twice straight through, and the 3rd in segments. I just think you've captured the cast so well. At least, interpreted them in a way I like to see them :D

I think...

[identity profile] morgie.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
... the storms broke my brain, cause I'm not scanning this into comphrension. Translate plzkthnkz. ;)

5a. And as I grow older, a little Harry/Asher is appealing, instead of appealing.

Re: I think...

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Crap! Spellcheck ruins my life! I meant "...appealing, instead of appalling." As in, Harry/Asher isn't as bad as it once was...

Fixing like a burning thing on fire....

[identity profile] morgie.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I /thought/, but my thinking has been off today.

Well, either that, or appalling, instead of appealing.. ;)

Re: I think...

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I find that the longer I remain in fandom, the more I find slash appealing. I'm being worn down.

But I'm not really sure what my excuse for the Asher/Harry thing is. Maybe that it's just a little wrong.

Re: I think...

[identity profile] morgie.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Gah. You are making me re-read. And I read and I read, and that one section I see hair every time, but all the other times, it's referencing hand.

I think this means it's time to go to bed, and pick up back on the assault tomorrow. Yeeesss.

Also, ignore any crack-reviews you may have gotten tonight.

[identity profile] askani.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
It didn't seem like there was only 3 chapters to look forward to last year. That may have been because I re-read the fic several times.

I can see if you've been writing this fic for 3 years that you don't really want to let it go. I haven't been following it since the beginning, but I have been for a couple years at least.

Your WIPs I follow because I know that eventually they will get finished. ♥

[identity profile] lunalovegoddess.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
1. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
2. I was so hoping that pregnancy hormones were to blame for the problems with the ardeur, so that the situation would be a temporary thing.
3. It was totally inspired.
4. I figured that her reluctance to sleep with a minor might give her control over the ardeur.
5. I thank you from the bottom of my slashy heart.
6. And still, not as bad as some I've read...
7. Ditto. I wish canon Richard would spank his inner child and just deal with it: he can't have it both ways.
8. Yeah; much as I like Micah, I have the same problem.
9. I really liked where the Flaming Nargles trio were headed. My favorite OT3 combination, as well.
10. Elsa is an intriguing character, that's for sure.

Harkness/Dumbledore slash makes so much sense. I'd love to see that.

Harkness/Dumbledore slash makes so much sense. I'd love to see that.

. . excuse me while I butt in here . .

. . I've never seen a full episode of Torchwood. I didn't actually finish Deathly Hallows, though I did get to the Grindlewald parts (I skipped around, reading-wise). And I'm not a fan of slash, really.

. .

. . but OMG, that so does! Make sense, I mean.

[identity profile] slybrarian.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's completely unforgivable that you wrote so little Inevitable. And by unforgivable, I mean "easily forgiven for 1940s Jack/Dumbledore". Bonus points if Jack continues to flirt with him in the present day.

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
I indeed must hang my head in shame.

If I write Jack/Dumbledore, will I really be forgiven? B/c i have a lovely idea for the first line of a fic between those two. Mostly to do with those pesky ethical issues, but it's interesting :)

[identity profile] slybrarian.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Ethics? What are those? Neither Torchwood nor the Wizarding World are particularly known for having trouble with those. :D

[identity profile] deepfishy.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
You cannot write a Torchwood/Inevitable crossover without including tiny!Welsh!werewolves! This are fact, like gravity.

Finish Inevitable! Then I can rec it again, as complete (and epic). :)

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
True. It is a fact like gravity. And since werewolves are Who!cannon, it cannot be denied.

I will finish Inevitable! It is next on the to-write list. And since I know how it ends, it should be easy, right?

Or, um, something.

And just cause I've seen it so much this last week...

One of my favourite parts of Inevitable is that Anita/Richard isn't as dysfunctional because I loved him before he started melting down in the books.

Oh god, I have so many 40'sDumbledore/Jack ideas now, damn your poll. =)

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Richard in early days, and when he pulls his shit together, is so awesome. I live in a dream world where he is still so. Ya know?

40s Jack/Dumbledore is so starting to grown on me, too. Damn it.

[identity profile] windmiran.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you know, in an Anita Blake universe not seen through LKH's eye, Richard isn't being slain by her perception of her ex. So, you know, for us Richard still totally isn't a whiny bitch allatime.

I was so torn between, "Dude, stop smoking that Canadian crack" and "I don't know the story or the show and just like to fill out polls" because well....both are good answers.

However, on reading the rest of the poll - it became clear. ;-)

Now...dude..seriously, I log onto lj for the first time in eons and the one of the first things I notice is an inevitable icon so I get totally excited.....only to discover its commentary on the lack of writing as opposed to an update and I totally deflate.

Alas, such is life. I did get a chuckle out of the ten info points.

I'm rereading the 5th book with my 8 year old now and every scene with Luna makes my evil mind wander to the OT3. Its not even gutter brain - its just that they would make such a great OT3 if ever there was one.

My poll answer got a bit short because even if I know enough about Torchwood to be fully behind this idea, I've never in fact seen a single episode and don't know what those people are *really* like so I couldn't actually sort them :) I can't promise I would read the crossover right away either, but I'd definitely check it out sometime in the future ^.^ I'm actually behind on Inevitable as well, I've decided I'll wait until you get it finished and then I'll read it all over again from the start :)

[identity profile] morganthegreat.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)

"How do you people stand me?"
Not to seem callous, but we do not have a choice.

Unfortunately it's not rare, in all fandoms, to have innocent readers seduced with a magnificent story. And then the get left high and dry for years.
(My personal record is a story that I've been following for 8 years.)

Writers don't do this on purpose, of course, but it's still..... unpleasant.
Inevitable is a good story, but, thankfully, I didn't feel in love with it like some other stories of yours. \o/

[identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
On a more serious note, I know exactly what you mean, which is why I have decided that enough is enough on Inevitable. Other than Dawning Light and Physics, it's the only big WIP that I have plans to finish.

My longest time frame following a story is about 4 years. The Mirror of Maybe, an HP story.

[identity profile] lilyoftheval5.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Mirror of Maybe, an HP story." Love that story!!!! And still faithfully waiting...

Inevitable is a good story, but, thankfully, I didn't feel in love with it like some other stories of yours.

Me either. I'm so psychotic about some of Mhal's stuff (read: Spin) it feels kind of weird to not care, but I'm sorta smug. Almost all of my other favourites have long waits between chapters. I read Mirror of Maybe, too, and if anyone knows Invictus by Chthonia, we got us a new chapter in January this year... after nothing throughout 2007. Totally worth it.

I totally picked Slytherin for everyone since I've never watched Torchwood. I keep hearing about it though. It's going on dundundun The List. (The List has stuff on it from the 90's still. Someday I will retire and watch a crapton of tv.)

Someone else who has a list! I have a list too, which would be halved if I could just get the sci-fi channel (I cannot keep up with shows, but I can handle it if they screen everything a dozen times). Last week I discovered Dylan Moran; today I learned that he is responsible for much of the awesomeness which Black Books is supposed to be (if that made sense). So that just moved up a few places...

The mixed POV is actually been pretty interesting trying to adapted...

A thing I wondered, esp. after JK Rowlings announcement, was if Dumbledore ever had a relationship with any of the known vampires in Inevitable-verse. I'm sure that he would of been of some kind of interest of some of the more powerful vampires in his younger years. Dumbledore being powerful himself... huh... Actually, now that I'm really thinking about it that I picturing him having tea with Captain Thomas Carswell (Padma's human servant)... He's certainly old enough...

Hello. Its Aomizuoko from TTHFANFIC.

You know, I love your stories (both the Dawning Light AND the HP/Anita Blake ones.)

Your writing is so damn GOOD, that I can't get enough of it.

I must have wasted about twelve days rereading, and rereading, and more rereading your fanfics because they are so damn awesome.

Its so professional, especially the Inevetible one. Although, switching views kind of throws one off, it only takes like, a second to get back into the story.

You know, its funny because I'm suddenly starting to mix up your fanfic with Conan because I keep thinking that that was actually what happened.

By the way, love the Ginny/Harry/Luna. Great pairing, though people are going to start accusing Anita of corrupting children. hehehe.

I can't wait to see Molly's reaction. Poor Harry.

But at any rate, I, like so many others, will be waiting for updates, on both of those stories. It doesn't matter how long it takes, so long as you finish eventually.

Love the writing, and keep up the awesome work! You ever find time, please check out my work as well.
^_^ *goes to reread Inevetible for the twentieth time simply because she can't get enough*

I am completely serious about the Jack Harkness/Dumbledore in the 40s slash. I'm not even a slash fan. But how good a match would younger Dumbledore be for Jack?! The awesomeness, you must show me it.

I dunno if this is too late but...

Before you do a crossover, can you finish Inevitable? It's almost over. I dunno what in the 9 hells Torchwood is but I'd LOVE to get a resolution to Inevitable before your mind jumps onto another train entirely. I was hoping for a sequel to tell you the truth, but I'd be satisfied with a completed fic.

[identity profile] merenwenkb.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorting the characters was so HARD! I mean, Gwen was obviously a hufflepuff 'cos of her loyalty to Rhys (most of the time anyway) and to torchwood itself. Equally Jack is obviously a Gryffindor, 'cos he jumps into danger without thinking about saving himself.

Tosh would probably be a ravenclaw, she loves working and making new things so would fit in well. The tricky ones were Owen and Ianto. Owen doesn't like work, so can't be a ravenclaw, and he isn't all that loyal so can't be a hufflepuff. He does have a habit of risking his life etc, but he always moans about it, and he likes to insult people, so overall he seems like a slytherin who is often forced to save idiotic gryffindors like Jack.

And Ianto, he's tricky. He's definately got slytherin characteristics, after all, he hid a cyberwoman in the basement for ages without being caught, but at the same time he's very bookish and good at paperwork. Wasn't sure on him but overall I think a slytherin is more likely to be bookish than a ravenclaw is to be sneaky.

But that's just my opinion, and I think I have probably spent far too much time thinking all that through.
