I started reading the series when NIC came out. The book blurb sounded intriguing, so immediately I checked out GP at the library, started the series from the beginning. I like how the characters have evolved and how (whether I agree with Anita's choices or not) they are understandable. I wasn't put off entirely with the sex scenes in later books, which had been a major point of disagreement with other LKH fans. ID could have made due with less, because after the first few you pretty much get the picture, that she really has no control over it. So, I do understand that there really was less police drama than usual.
I am looking forward to Danse Macabre, because (if you read the first 3 chapters online) it is an interesting and eventual plot twist. I was pretty pissed that someone who had received an ARC (advanced reader copy) blurted out the major plot point without putting a spoiler warning on it. *sigh* I really would have liked to have found out for myself, seeing as how the book will be released shortly. It's like the person who shouted out the ending of Half-Blood Prince to a crowd of people picking up their copies.
I'm still interested in reading it, though.

Do I miss the police work? Somewhat, but truth be told, there can only be so much blood and gore in the books before you start to desensitize. We're 13 books into the series now, so I get the feeling that even Anita is a bit jaded from her experiences. The only thing that still seems to shock her is crime involving children. I'm not opposed to taking things in a different direction. I think it is inevitable that something has to break before Anita truly accepts that she cannot live the same life she used to. The boundaries between who is a monster and who is not have blurred too much know for her not to change with the times.
