In the first part of the series, she was very isolated and refused to let anyone into her life -- Jean-Claude really was the only one to work at becoming a part of her life (and even then, it took her so long to open up to him). Richard hated himself too much to be able to make it work with Anita.

But I could go on for days about Anita's fears of abandonment, so I will cut myself here :)
