Inara paused in braiding Kaylee's hair, and reached behind her on the bed. "Here," Inara said. "Let's see how this looks on you."
Kaylee's eyes went round in the mirror. "Oh, I can't."
"Of course you can," Inara said with a smile. "See how beautiful it is on you?"
The stone in the necklace, a deep red with gold veins running out from the center, lay against Kaylee's skin, almost glowing on the happy girl. The beaming smile on Kaylee's face made Inara's heart lift.
Inara pulled a few tiny strands of hair out of the braid to frame Kaylee's face. She wanted to suggest Kaylee wear the necklace at her wedding, but Companion training held. Simon still had his doubts. He needed to move on before he could give himself to Kaylee, and Inara would not ruin that for her friend.
"Shall I tell you a story?" Inara asked, picking up the brush once again. Kaylee nodded. "Once upon a time, on earth that was, there was magic, and it was everywhere."
Inara let her grandmother's stories flow off her tongue, tales of magic and fairy princesses and love and honor, and Kaylee never knew that Inara spoke truth.

Date: 2006-05-08 11:19 pm (UTC)Excellent. My work here is done.
I can see Kaylee loving any stories about the fanciful magic, the grace that exists in the public face of a Companion. Plus, having such a glamourus friend must mean a lot to a girl like Kaylee (coming from a family of mechanics and all that)
*loves them both*

Date: 2006-05-09 04:04 am (UTC)I need to get myself some femmeslashy goodness going on. Not sure what, though.
Inara's a perfect candidate for being Sidhe. She's perfect at poise and subterfuge and just being really hot and mysterious. Oh, Inara.

Date: 2006-05-09 09:03 am (UTC)Ever since your first FF/MG story I've been hoping you'd write more *grins*
I'd love to know Merry's viewpoint from that first story, especially what she thought of Inara choosing to leave the Sidhe.
Curious about the pendent though -is it magical? Is that why Inara doesn't want Kaylee to wear it yet? So as not to influence Simon yet?

Date: 2006-05-10 12:38 am (UTC)We'll learn more about Merry's thoughts on Inara leaving in the next chapter of the new story I posted today, a continuation of this universe.
The necklace isn't magical, not like that (or Merry wouldn't have given it to a human, no matter their blood ties, frankly), but it means something very special to Inara. It's her only connection with that part of her heritage, and to let Kaylee wear it in a ceremony would be Inara's ultimate blessing to that pair. Since Simon is still uncertain, Inara is holding that back.
Make any sense?
