This post is rather Harry Potter heavy. FYI.

Firstly, some blather about Inevitable. I've got 10 kb of the next chapter written, which makes more sense when you know that adds up to 1,500 words. It's got a whole hell of a lot of stuff happening, and we'll dart back and forth between Hogwarts and St. Louis, in an interesting way. It's going to be a long chapter and I can probably get it out by Friday... I hope. We'll see.

But anyway, let's play a rousing round of "Guess who the mean author sets in her sights in this chapter!"

[Poll #726557]

I'm a mean, mean author. But, in my defence, I can say that this round of character, er, "development" is vital to the plot and gives our heroes the important clue to answer not one, not two, but two and a half questions that have been plaguing them in the story, and will help them move on.

Four Harry Potter Drabbles

First two set years after the end of the books, last two set "back in the day". My fave is the second.

Title: By Hand
Characters: Molly

Molly sat in the darkness of a single candle, waiting. Arthur would be home soon. Once, when the house was full of nine people, Molly craved silence. Now, with only Ginny and Ron home during the holidays, the silence settled into her bones in the night, leaving her wishing for what had once been.

Shaking her head at her introspection, Molly picked up her sewing. Bill and Fleur had told her there was another Weasley on the way. For this new baby, Molly sat up in the dark, stitching by hand, as she had for each of her own children.

Title: Name Change
Characters: Ron, mysterious witch

"We should get married," Ron said, slurring his words a bit.

His drinking partner giggled. "We can't get married."

"Why not?" Ron carefully poured another round of firewhiskey, emptying the bottle into her glass. "We're adults, right? Fought in the war and all that? You like me!"

"Yes, but--"

"And!" Ron exclaimed, lifting his glass, "You like my butt."

The giggling turned into a full-blown laugh. "I'm not changing my last name to Weasley, you berk! Got my career to think about, independent woman and all that."

Ron shrugged. "I can live with being Ronald Tonks. What about it?"

Title: London Calling
Characters: James, Lily

James stared at the table. "Lily?"

His pregnant wife looked up. "Yes?"

"About the table setting..."

Lily maneuvered over. "Do you like it? I got it in London."

"It's..." Hideous was what came to mind.

Lily stared at him with wide green eyes for a minute before she grinned. "It's interesting, I know," she said, hugging him.

The baby kicked hard enough between them for James to feel it. "I liked it," Lily continued. "It's kitsch."

James frowned. "Is that muggle for 'bloody awful'?"

The baby kicked again. "Good boy," Lily said to her stomach. "Your father has no taste."

Title: Value
Characters: Lily, baby!Harry

Lily stared down at her tiny son, green eyes closed in sleep. Carefully, she lifted the child into her arms.

When Lily was a girl, she'd wished her family had been rich, able to afford nice dresses and all sorts of toys and books.

She hadn't known, what it was to be a mother. A sword hung over their heads, hovering, waiting to fall on her precious, tiny boy.

It wasn't until she'd held Harry for the first time that she had realized exactly how little value money or power held for her any more.

All that mattered was love.

Oh, I love all of these! Though I admit to 1 and 2 being my favs. 1 because I've done that myself for my nieces, nephews, and soon to be godchild, and 2 because...well... Ronald Tonks? lol. Poor Ron, can you imagine his mother's reaction to that?

I would *love* to figure out how that conversation would go. At least we know Molly likes Tonks...

oh man, must.. not... ship Tonks and Ron...

If I'm going to ship Tonks with anyone, it's going to be Rafael.

uh oh. Um, forget I said that. K? Thanks.

I voted for Michael Corner on the poll, but if Edward could in any way get his ass stomped, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I like the last drabble best, because I'm a sucker for motherhood. The first is such a very Molly thing to do.

Hee.

The strong mother roles in the Harry Potter books are quite a refreshing change from a lot of other fiction, where the mother role is diminshed. I know I really value my mommy's place in my life (and being 27, I'm still allowed to call her mommy).

I love all the drabbles, but I absolutely adore the last one.

{{hugs}} I've missed you in the last couple of weeks! We'll have to catch up once I'm actually, ya know, around again. :)

I do get a lot of milage out of the dramatic irony of mother about to sacrific it all for love. It's just one of the oldest stories out there, and it gets me every single time.

Ya know, I'm really maudlin tonight.

But yes! Catch up when you are done the crazy busy times! Good luck on surviving the rest of your week :D

All the drabbles are lovely, and I voted for Corner, on the idea that he's been awfully quiet lately.

Exorcising an Edwardness:

-----------

Edward's memory was excellent from the beginning, and he had spent years honing it with various exercises. This meant that he could see events in his head with crystal-clarity, replaying them and freeze-framing them at will to examine their contents.

Right now, he was sitting at his desk, his feet propped up on an open drawer, his actual eyes closed while his mental eyes scanned the image of Harry Potter.

He had seen the boy wizard just as he'd kicked the door open. The boy was fuzzy in a silvery sort of way, as if he wasn't really there. But he had been "there" enough to direct an Impedimenta spell at Olaf, which held the maniac in place while Edward got a brief look at Olaf's handiwork.

Ted Forrester would have thrown up on the spot. Edward did not throw up, but he did empty his gun into Olaf's skull, even though the first bullet was more than enough to do the job. By the time the echo of the last shot had faded, Harry Potter was gone.

Edward knew more about the Wizarding World than all but a handful of other non-wizards. Therefore, he knew enough to know that what Potter had accomplished was not Apparition, as it wasn't Potter's physical body that was present. It was a sort of out-of-body projection, likely done while the boy was asleep. However, only the most powerful wizards could toss around spells like Impedimenta while out of their bodies -- and certainly none as young as Harry Potter had ever managed it.

Edward imagined the coming duel between Voldemort and Potter. He smiled.

*brain explody* I was going to write Anita and Edward in chapter 67 and have forgotten what I was going to have them do, because of your insane good drabble! (and the sheery flimsiness of my own plotting)(and my inability to write a gorram word today) So, yay! *luvs*

Haha I love you, because of things like this. I adore the one with Ron and (I'm guessing) Tonks. Ats first I thought it may be Pansy but then the ending where he's like

"I can live with being Ronald Tonks. What about it?"

You know for the poll I picked that Draco should get the Who gets the stuffing knocked out of him. Only cause I think that Hermione should hit him and maybe even invite him to come with her during christmas break *hint hint* I'm so bad LOL. But Naw I want to see Draco get hit just cause he really has it coming. But I wouldnt mind if Michael Corner got the stuffing knocked out of him. Or maybe....naw I'm having thoughts of Ginny punching Ron cause he says something to her about Luna liking her and it being "wrong". HAHA I have some off the wall thoughts sometimes.

Date: 2006-05-12 12:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
Yup, it was Tonks. It was a nice change from anything I'd ever seen.

Draco get hit just cause he really has it coming.
In the context of this story, can't say as I disagree :D

There's actually no punching, but I can't say what form of character whumping I'm indulging in, as I'd give away the chapter :)

*sniffle* Value is just lovely. I do a enjoy a good look at Lily. And the idea of Ronald Tonks is too funny. What would Hermione say?

Date: 2006-05-12 12:31 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
I figure that Hermione and Ron had parted ways ammicabley at that point. Ron's not the kind of person to be cheating.

Although, I can fancy a guess that Hermione would be a mite surprised at it being Tonks, not that she'd let anyone see that. Besides Harry. Oh, lordy, I'm just imagining all kinds of tangents.

Keep writing drabbles like that and I won't mind waiting for the next Inevitable chapter. Those were really good. The first was my favorite. Ah, empty nest syndrome. Great fodder for stories.

*g* I do like a drabble, it helps having the attention span of a peanut butter cookie sometimes.

It's great to see Lily, James and baby!Harry!!! I don't see them as often as I'd like, especially the two reluctant lovebirds :)

I really liked the 2nd one...Ronald Tonks! *snickers* Loved it!!!

Can't wait for more Inevitable!!

And quick question: Do you write anything besides first person? Like third person or omnipresent...how do switch seamlessly between the characters?

You don't have to answer the questions, but I want to attempt a non-first-person one-shot and I'm having difficulty with viewpoints.

Love and chocolate kisses!!

Date: 2006-05-12 01:38 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
First person means I, wheras third person means "Mal." I tend to stick with 1st or 3rd person limited, not really straying into omnicient narrator role. I find it easier to keep track of the action, and more of a challenge to explain all of what's going on with only one person's thoughts.

The main thing in writing multiple POV stuff is to avoid confusing your readers.

Does that help?

*snickers* I claim second and third drabbles as my favorites *grins*
As for the poll, I think we all /want/ Corner to be de-stuffed, but you said mean author. That leads me to think you're not going to give us immediate gratification on that point... or maybe I'm overthinking things. As per usual.

Date: 2006-05-12 01:40 am (UTC)

but you said mean author.

I sure did. I'll tell you this: The person who actually will get it is averaging lower in the poll above.

From: [identity profile] dvak-64.livejournal.com
You're a bad influence. I was tempted to click Luna to get beat up, just to see how you'd write the extent to which Harry and Ron go bat-shit crazy, and the subsequent ass-kicking Corner would have coming his way. Maybe busting through a painting into the Ravenclaw common room or something. But I'm not that mean.

Are you? Cause seriously, that'd be an awesome (if somewhat disturbing) read.

Date: 2006-05-12 02:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
I'm a bad influence? Blame JKR and LKH, it's their fault(s)

And dude, that would be a scary thing to happen. I put Michael in the corner, with all other bullies: Not willing to stand up to someone who fights back. I can't see him (as I've written him here) attacking Luna, once he knew that a) others would stand up for her (and yes, sadly, that it's another guy) and b) that Luna wouldn't take it any more. And Michael's not *evil*, he's just stupid and biggoted and a bully. Dudley, versus Voldemort.

Date: 2006-05-12 02:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dvak-64.livejournal.com
Ah, see, I agree there. He won't attack her on purpose, with premeditation. But he seems like the kind of person who would take Luna off to the side, maybe, to try to "reason" to her and get her to work for him again, and she'd refuse, and he'd just get more and more flustered and then he'd hit her. Or, hit her more than once. And then the bat-shit crazy will commence.

Date: 2006-05-12 02:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] practical-puss.livejournal.com
I can see that. Great idea, it's almost a pity The person who actually will get it is averaging lower in the poll above. It would have truly been a beating to behold.

So... Remus pissed of the Bolverk?
Ginny picked a fight?
Someone snapped and beat Hermione about the head with her own bookbag?

Are you her beta, mayhaps?

Oh well... maybe my idea'll be incorporated into an upcoming chapter? Maybe? Maybe?

Nope, nope and nope. Although that last is sort of tempting...

From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
I think you're underestimating Luna. She took on several Death Eaters. She's not a fainting flower when it comes to physical violence directed her way. Even if Michael were to start something, she'd hex his balls into another dimension. I can see her being practical about that sort of thing.

Date: 2006-05-12 04:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dvak-64.livejournal.com
Maybe I'm sadistic? I can still see (your version of) Michael Corner being so overreactive that she becomes seriously hurt, maybe, or hurting her enough that even after he becomes a falsetto Harry and Ron will still go after him (and perhaps Ginny, too... even though Luna would plead that they all not do so).

Date: 2006-05-12 05:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
I think I get what you mean now about his reaction. I can see certain situations in which Michael, pushed to a corner (I can't help the Corner jokes, sorry) could lash out at Luna. It won't happen in this story (as I intend to have Luna and Ginny get over that bump in their relationship due to outside pressures demanding it) but I see your point.

Date: 2006-05-12 05:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dvak-64.livejournal.com
