You all may have been noticing that none of the WIPs have been updated recently. There are two reasons for this:

1. Shiny new obsession: Oh, Stargate Atlantis. How you occupy the 5% of my brain devoted to fanfic/fandom (the other 95% is doing the important stuff, like regulating breathing and bad posture and wondering how they got the caramel in the caramilk bar). I'm fully aware that this will soon pass, or at least sublimate into the mess of other fandoms and, more importantly, fanfic in my head.

And yes, that noise you heard was me sighing at the inevitability of me starting a rather long epic story in SGA. It's probably going to be a shippy fic and I get to address that age-old question: So, were there any criminal Ancients before they all got Ascendy? Yeah, it's going to be really cheesy, but whatever. I don't plan to start this right now; I still have to get the plot down. And I have to ensure that I don't write the whole damned thing in present tense.

2. I'm stuck midway through not one, not two, but three boring chapters (Magnolia, Balancing Act, Inevitable), and I have to admit my enthusiasm for writing anything longer than 1,000 words has waned. I'm not in a rut: I know how the stories are going to go and all that. It's the typing that's getting to me. Maybe a re-read of the stories is in order.

Long story short (TOO LATE) things are puttering along nicely. So, all fics (including the ficlette fiasco stories) will come when they come :)

Oh, also I'm putting my SGA fics up on Wraithbait here.

But present tense is FUN! (Okay, so I opted out of the present tense for the entire Underworld fic, but it started that way and got re-written. Present tense is just so . . .artsy. Immediate. It gives it a sorta dreamy you-are-so-THERE feel of immersion, to read, I think.

.. and take heart, at least you're not STILL obsessively trying to write Russell/Holmes wedding night fic that you're probably going to be too embarrassed to ever let anyone see anyway, that is currently 7 pages long and would still only earn itself a PG-13.

Present tense works in short pieces, not so much the long ones. And it's different enough from the normal conventions of writing that I have to have a reason to use it. Otherwise I have to slap myself in the face with a dead trout.

Drabble fics are fun & wonderful. & if you feel pressured to finish anything, you can sic me on the demanding little heathens. I admit that while getting more of your long fics is good, keeping the writer happy is more important. Besides, you can hold me up as an example (I have people demanding me to finish over 20 wip's or to do more with at least 15 shorts.)

As for the SGA fic, rock on! Criminal Ancients! Shipish! Cheesy! Please do it, soon! The best part of SGA-verse is that it can be v. serious or v. cracky or both & still be great.

At this early stage in the SGA world, it's good for me to write small things; to get used to the universe and the characters. Once I get a handle on Rodney McKay, I can get started on the Monster fic (which, of course, will not involve monsters) (well, maybe the one).

And I've got the plot figured out, for the most part, and all I need is an appropriate title. Sadly, "Inevitable" is already taken.

Always glad to hear about new fic!

So, were there any criminal Ancients before they all got Ascendy?

Well, in the episode from S1 (or was it S2?) where the team finds a cryofrozen Weir in Atlantis, it turns out she was working with a Lantean scientist against the wishes of the city's council to help get her back to her own time. His name was Janus.

Then, of course, there's Merlin, who was building a weapon to incapacitate ascended beings - and that's gotta be dubious. And Oma Desala always treads the line between "allowed" and "pushing it." Maybe she was a bit of a mischief maker before her ascension, too?

I don't mean "not going along with the dubious rules about non-interference", but the depths of deprativty that any civilization can produce, especially when a society has such a massive power of life or death over others.

I'm doing this, after all, because I'm mean and like to torture fictional characters (although there won't actually be any torture involved.)

So write short chapters for the other stories.. who says there is some minimum word length... Of course I am "stuck" myself, but that has more to do with work eating my higher brain functions.

I am sad to hear that you're stuck on a chapter of _Inevitable_, because I really miss _Inevitable_ updates. Try WD-40 or acetone, unless you're wearing rayon. ;-)
