A question to the folks who have read Danse Macabre: I'm on page 269. Is there a point to this book or just more Anita whining about what she's becoming? Like, does anything ever happen?

See - things like that make me glad I didn't waste the $19 to get it at B&N yesterday.

It's so dumb, because I really wanted to like this book, but there's no hint of a plot so far. Besides the Anita's powers are growing at the speed of light thing. I love the Anita Blake universe (as is apparent from most of my fanfic) but I can't see a point to this book so far.

Of course, I think you and I both belong to the "get them in the first five paragraphs or they won't read it" school of writing.

So yeah, a little bummed about this.

You know, this is the first time I actually feel for Richard's whininess. Anita's world view is SO fucking skewed that she really can't see just how FUBAR it is to the average person. Richard may have issues, but clinging onto the hopes for a monogamous relationship? Not so far fetched.

Date: 2006-06-28 08:25 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mhalachaiswords.livejournal.com
Yeah, well, from what I see, Richard wants to have it both ways but won't accept either, while Anita has things her way and she'd fine with that.

As a non sequiter, I miss Edward.

I haven't read it yet *very carefully skimming comments* But I've been saying for ages that L.K.H. has been regressing Anita ever since book 10. I kinda wished she's ended the series there. Anita was happy at the end of that book. Then we just HAAAAD to keep the angst up to keep the story going, so suddenly she's freaking out over the same issues that she DEALT WITH 3-5 BOOKS AGO!

Book 12 was a big mess, story wise, heaps of unresolved moments and plot all over the place. I think Ms Hamilton is losing her way, just a bit, I can't see that she's actually going anywhere with all this anymore. :( Which makes me sad, coz like, Anita rules. :(

I'm not quite finished with the book, but I'm interested. ::shrug:: I'm ok with it going slow and whining because I know once this is out of the way, we'll get back to Anita being the cop that she is deep down. I miss Dolph and Zerbrowski.

I like the sex. And the crazy things going on with her having all the strains of lycanthropy and having both VS and MS is crazy. Makes me think how weird and messed up her life is.

I guess I just admire her imagination. She's kept this story running longer that I think it would have without all the plots. I guess when I get into something I just like it to keep going... by any means. ::shrug:: I mean, I would have watched Buffy where they were just shopping and going to work and only killing the OCCASIONAL demon.

I get obsessed very easily.

While I haven't picked up my copy yet, I get what you're saying. She whined so much in the last few books about losing her prudeness and gaining all these powers. I could tolerate more sex, as long as it moves the plot along. The plot seems to not be about solving crime anymore, but about Anita becoming what she feared most: a monster. I was looking forward to seeing her stop getting all CAPSLOCK HARRY (angst much?) and finally say, "Alright, so I'm a monster. But I'm still one of the good guys."

As for where she is going as a character, I think there is a very good reason why vampires are afraid of necromancy. Anyone else see her going all Dark Willow due to the various metaphysical shit? Edward might just have to take a bounty on her head after all...

Totally just finished it tonight (bought it last night).

There is some interesting plotty-type stuff near the end, when they get to the ballet and all. Lots more sex, and some good humor, too, in some places. I found most of this book was leading up to the next ones, and digging more into the powers Anita's getting, and the powers the others are getting (Asher).

Richard killed me ded. I feel for Anita when it comes to him. He does have some valid points, but he really just wants her all to himself and for them to be 'not monsters'. Gah, I dunno...at times I can't stand him, then he does something and I'm like, "I love Richard". I missed Edward, he's one of my favourite characters, and I missed Zerbrowski. I loved all the Nathaniel.

The only major issue I had with the book, was the name of one of the guards. It was distracting. I won't say it here, cause it's spoilery, but if anyone's read the book, they'll know which guard, and why!

Anyway, all in all, I liked it, though I do think that's it's one of those "transition books".

No...other than answering the pregnancy question, nothing happens. I don't think it was quite as bad as ID, and I was definitely intrigued by Samuel and his family. But the lack of mystery bugged me, and the pacing drove me crazy. 480-something pages about 48 hours is way too slow.

Also, is this just my impression, or did everyone (espescially Anita and JC), seem out of character when they wre interacting with Augustine?

Yes no, cause I just finished it and I dont so much see a real plot as something else, um damn how do I say this with out ruining it for you, assuming you didnt finish. I think its more an explaination as to why Sweet Mother is so interested in her and to...um I cant say it in words (I suck like that) without doing a long ass explaination that I'm to lazy to type. But all I can say is for the most part I'm disapointed that it took so long and all the good came out of this is my loving of London, Requiem and Asher.

From the review I read:

There is nothing of the Executioner here, no cases to be solved or zombies raised, just plenty of vampire and to a lesser degree, lycanthrope politics interspersed with Anita feeding the ardeur.

So, from that alone I gather that there isn't much plot. Thus, I haven't even bought the thing yet. Not sure if I plan to before it's out on paperback. We'll see. Lemme know what you think when you've finished it, please. Spoilers don't scare me . . . knowing how it ends/what happens won't keep me from reading it, after all.

I haven't read the book so I am trying not to read too carefully the comments here but...

I think she wrote in her blog that she put only one third of what she was initially planning into the book. Translation: we are not getting the full plot and she just wrapped what was only a beginning... Considering the book is over 1000 pages. EEEEK!

She's writing too long. As someone above mentioned 480 pages for 48 hours is scary. (the problem first occured on latest Merry Gentry books)

I don't know if the book will be out (as in British edition) before I leave Turkey but I am still looking forward to the book. I agree the series is in a downhill. But I still find beautiful scenes in it. I mean I was re-reading Cerulean Sins and Anita chasing that evil werewolf, having to execute him in the middle of a mall and the moral issues after it. LKH is a talented writer. That didn't change. And hell, she is the only vampire novelist I know that doesn't destroy french, well not too much at least... Some minor errors here and there but no major flinches.

story line

From: (Anonymous)
I just finished the book. I feel like she had to cut this book up and make more books, I'm thinking the plot line is mostly left for the next book. But it saddens me that she has so many men that some are being forgoten, poor Asher.....
But I think as far as adding any more 'main men' she's done. I hope so anyway, I don't want her to have a lion king, it will make Micha seem not so important, I like Micha:(

My main take is she is setting the story up, writing about how everything is going to fit together later on in the story. Her books have grown, the series has grown so much that its not about instant gradification (sp) any more. She trying to spred the story out in to a few books not just one.

All I can say is yawn. All Anita does is complain, by far the worst in the series. I haven't even bothered to read Micah.

YOu know what I rememeber that made me smile, Ms (or is it Mrs?) Hamilton said a while ago that this is going to be an ongoing series and that she really doesnt know how its going to end so my thing is no matter how they get fucked now she can and is going to redeem them so I'm ok. I think every book may not have a "good" plot but some where down the line theres going to be a point to everything that happened.

Truthfully I have had to decide to read LKH for the sex and men. When I want to read about fucking I read her. (And she takes me to a different place with every book...I love Haven! Cookie!!!) When I want plot I read elsewhere...when I want plot in the Antiaverse...I read Mhalachai. Truthfully I think she's going the way of Tolkien and Rice and Poe. She's in love with adjectives and over desciption. I still found it readable and felt like the editors had done to her what was done to Tolkien, that the editor told her..'well this is way too long; it will be released as several books'. I think this is part of a series arc within the series as a whole. It simply has that feeling to me. And her Merry series is beginning to be that way also it seems. WHen I reach the end of the book its like someone tore the rest of it out.

I think the only character development happening here is Nathaniel's. I have decided I'm in this series for Nathanial, and maybe Asher.

Anita basically whined and screwed throughout the entire book, and wibbled over her situation.

My friend warned me, but I bought a copy anyway.

Funny thing, I was thinking that LKH finally got a decent editor to clean up the dangling plotlines, but it sounds like she avoided the issue by leaving the plot out entirely. Is that it?

Just finished and will agree that it is not one of my favorites. However, I simply consider it a transition to the next book where we will deal with Sampson, Asher, Mother of All Darkness, her Lioness, ect... She's done it before. The addition of more men, don't really know how I feel about that one. Overall, just want the next one to come out so I can get another fix.

Favorite Quote (Possibly of all time):
"I'd like to know how you feel about this, yeah."
"Suck my dick so we can fuck." He was smiling while he said it.
I blinked at him for a second or two, then shrugged, and said, "Okay."

I love it.

I just finished the book and was very disappointed. Now it's the metaphysical vampire crap that makes the men in Anita's life love her?

And the ardeur molds people and seeks out powerful mates for Anita...give me a break...

I think that LKH is finding ways to remove any guilt/responsiblity for her character's sexual practices. I laughed when Anita found herself in bed with 3 men. How do you top that? An orgy? Sex with Claudia?

The sex should be the icing on the cake and not the cake (you become numb to it after a while). She needs to go back to raising zombies and solving crimes.

I hated when Jean Claude and Mica suggested that Anita infect herself with different strains of lycan blood. Doesn't she have enough problems already? It seems like a callous and out of character suggestion on their part (especially Mica). Just how many more animal strains are going to become part of Anita's makeup?

What was the pregnancy scare about? Is she now immortal? Have her menstrual cycles slowed down because she is no longer human? (Wasn't she also bitten by a Snake-shifter (an immortal) in one book? Perhaps that is the other unidentified virus/blood strain in her. Could that have kicked in the immortality?)

Sigh... this is why I'm soo sad about the AB verse and why I've turned to fanfic. I sort of dropped off after CS. (I just sort of skimmed CS and didn't buy it.) I didn't bother with Micah or DM.

I know why you're feeling bummed. I would be too if I paid that much for LHK's newest book. Her writing is rather sounding like bad Mary Sue fic. She really needs a good strong editor to take her in hand and help her out. There was so much potential in the AB verse and now look.

do you mind if I go off and cry in the corner. I miss the old Anita verse.

Hey! This is Nichole, I finally got an LJ account.

I know I'm a little late, but I completely agree that the book had no point. It was all about Anita messing up everyone else's lives (accidentally of course) then her whining about it. There was a lot of stuff that could have been edited out to make the storyline seem less circular and make room for resolving issues that were actually interesting and mattered. I found myself sympathizing with everyone, but Anita at times (even Meng Die!). The sex was over the top not believeable and gratuitous at times which was something LKH swore never to indulge in and I could totally Anita losing the respect of the guards. She kept asking way too many questions that had already been answered or if they hadn't yet been, she'd ask them then leave them unanswered only to bring them up again. Plus, she didn't do anything she said she would. I know she's battling the ardeur and everything, but with everything that happens, she continued to have unprotected sex and only used condoms some of the time.

It wasn't all bad though. Some of the issues and concepts of the ardeur were great, especially how she got Nate and Micah. It helped me accept Micah more. I think LKH had a lot of great ideas, I'm just not sure I like the way she presented them and the direction she went with them.

Is this reminding anyone else about the Merry Gentry books more than usual?

I also saw a lot of parallels between your stories, Mhalachai and DM. The way Anita tried to cut everyone off in Inevitable was similar. It shows you have a great grasp of Anita's character and reactions. LKH also talked about Anita's life before she started in on all the sex and how Anita started to change, some think for the worse. It reminded me of Switchback.

Ok, I didn't mean for that to turn into a rant. Sorry about that, lol. I was just expecting more from LKH.

Nichole

Haven't read the book yet, but the relative lack of point to the last few Anita books is why, frankly, I think you're writing better LKH than LKH is at the moment. Your Anita still does kewl stuff and kick butt as well as shag gorgeous preternatural men and whine.
